JIM Byrne notched a record-equalling fourth Toowoomba Cup win as Cylinder Beach stamped his Winter Carnival passport with a dominant performance in yesterday’s $100,000 feature.

Byrne joined Jack Ross and Ben Tebb as the most successful jockeys in the race’s history, having previously won on Dutch Boy (1994), ‘Tis Love (2001) and Honey Toast (2016).

Yesterday’s win on Cylinder Beach came after a slower than expected getaway.

“It went pear-shaped out of the gates. He was a bit slow away and I planned to be a lot handier than I was,” Byrne said.

“But it probably turned out to be a blessing. I was able to get him into a really good rhythm and breathing pattern back in the field.

“He was the best horse in the race and I just had to keep him out of trouble.

“He wanted to hang in a bit which is unlike him. It was probably because he’s never been that wide before.”

Like Pornichet two years earlier, Cylinder Beach made light of his hefty impost and Byrne believes he can make a similar impact on the carnival as Pornichet did.

“I think he’s a really good stayer. He has a good turn of foot and he can use that under a big weight,” Byrne said.

“I know the opposition is not there yet, but I have no doubt he can measure up to the winter carnival with those attributes.”

Trainer Desleigh Forster is adamant Cylinder Beach will be even better at 2400m and she’s earmarked a Brisbane Cup campaign.

“He was the best horse in the race and that’s the way he won. Jimmy does such a great job with him. He’s won three from three on him now,” she said.
